Roof Gutter

Roof gutters are an essential part of a building’s rainwater management system. They are installed at the perimeter of a roof to collect and divert rainwater away from the foundation. This prevents the water from pooling around the base of the building, which can damage the foundation and cause other structural issues. Additionally, gutters can protect the roofing system by preventing water from seeping into the fascia or shingles, which can cause premature decay and damage.

Properly designed and installed gutters can also help to reduce the risks of flooding and basement leakage in homes located in areas with high rainfall. This is because gutters help to redirect water away from the foundation, preventing it from seeping into the walls and potentially entering the living space. In this sense, gutters play an important role in maintaining the overall stability and integrity of the structure, both internally and externally. By ensuring that rainwater is properly managed and redirected, gutters help to reduce the likelihood of damage and improve the long-term sustainability of the building.

How it works

Collection

The roof gutter collects rainwater or melted snow as it flows down the roof’s surface. The shallow trough or channel, typically made of metal or plastic, is strategically placed along the roof’s edge to intercept the water runoff.

Channeling

Once the water is collected in the gutter, it is directed through a system of sloped channels or troughs. The gutter is designed with a slight downward slope to facilitate the flow of water towards downspouts or drainpipes. This ensures that the water is effectively channeled away from the roof and building.

Diversion

The collected water is then diverted away from the building’s foundation. It is directed towards downspouts or drainpipes, which carry the water downward and away from the structure. The downspouts can extend vertically along the side of the building or connect to an underground drainage system, ultimately redirecting the water to a safe location where it won’t cause damage.
